Tribal Workforce Development
The Tribal Affairs Program is committed to ensure CALFIRE cultivates robust partnerships, fosters trust, and improves communication between CALFIRE and the California Native American Tribes, including the 109 Federally Recognized Tribes and Non-Federally Recognized Tribe. The program aims to build and ensure the meaningful participation and inclusion of Tribal Nations and communities within the work of CALFIRE, including supporting the effective integration of the Tribes and community interests in fire protection, public safety, and resource management, including the protection of cultural resources.
The Tribal Affair Program collaborates and coordinates tribal affairs within CAL FIRE’s programs and Administrative Units located statewide by supporting them in nurturing relationships, enhancing communication, and facilitating meaningful government-to-government consultation and collaboration with the California Native American Tribes. It prioritizes increasing cultural awareness and sensitivity within CALFIRE to foster a deeper understanding of Tribal heritage by providing training and informational resources, as well as advises the department on Tribal state legislation and ensures implementation of tribal policies.
