Project Learning Tree
Project Learning Tree (PLT) is an award winning, multidisciplinary environmental education program used by educators and students in grades PreK-12. PLT, a program of the American Forest Foundation, is one of the most widely used and respected environmental education programs in the United States and abroad. CAL FIRE sponsors the Project Learning Tree program in California with support from the California Community Forests Foundation and the USDA Forest Service, Region 5.
Project Learning Tree materials use the forest as a "window on the world". PLT lessons teach not only about trees, but also about land use, water, air, soil, habitat, wildlife, fire in order to help students gain an awareness and understanding about the complexity of the environment. These lessons help them to gain knowledge, confidence and commitment to take responsible actions. All PLT lessons are aligned with the PreK-12 California content standards and the California Environmental Education Initiative "environmental principles and concepts".
The PLT program provides workshops statewide for both formal and non-formal educators including teacher in-service programs, teacher training programs through universities, youth leaders, naturalists, natural resources managers and parents. The PLT activity guides are only made available through participation in a workshop. To join a workshop check the "calendar of events", a list of sessions available statewide or contact the California PLT State Coordinator Kay Antunez or call 916-653-7958.
